Pros and Cons of Current Stem Cell Research

Stem cells are non-specialized cells that have the potential to differentiate into other cell types such as blood, brain, muscle, and tissue cells. Current stem cell research is fueled by these stem cells that are studied in laboratories to understand the fundamental properties of cells. Embryonic stem cells are often the most potent and most effective way to research about stem cells. However, this stem cell research has led to a controversial debate about ethics. Since this debate began, researchers didn’t give up and moved into studying more ethical stem cells which are induced pluripotent stem cells.

This is probably the highlight of stem cell research as being able to create IPS cells allowed them to continue advancing in their research without embryonic stem cells. To understand this debate here are the pros and cons of stem cell research.

Pros of Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research has the potential to uncover how we can treat various diseases and illness. It could also lead us to creating different medications that will allow us to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and heart diseases. Some researchers also suggest that we can manipulate birth defects even before he baby is born with proper studies of stem cell research.

Most people nowadays have a lot of injuries especially in the elderly where they have weaker spines and are prone to spinal injuries. Spinal cord injuries are difficult to treat and are extremely painful for the patient. This is why spinal research on stem cells on how treating spinal cord injuries is the priority for most labs.

Current stem cell treatments involved treatments that can help increase an injury’s recovery time. Most athletes often get stem therapy when they have a fracture, or torn tissue that is acquired through their intense training. Stem cell therapies often give them the chance to get treated without the need of surgical procedures. This allows them to recover faster and set to get back to their training or their sport.

As more research is being done on stem cells, there is also a chance to help a person repair damaged organs. This eliminates the need of having to get transplantations which can reduce the risk of complications. Stem cell research has led some researchers to the conclusion that there is a possibility to grow that specific organ and have higher success rates in transplantations in the future.

Cons of Stem Cell Research

As mentioned before, the main con of stem cell research is about ethics. Debate about stem cell research got people saying that we should not mess with human life and we can’t play God. Some also argue that stem cell research can be harmful for us in the future. They emphasized that it may lead to us creating clones of ourselves instead of using for medicinal advancements.

In conclusion, stem cell research has a lot of benefits but is limited due to ethics. There are a lot of people that are trying to study stem cells San Diego but most people are considering these cons to be harmful for us. Most researchers value ethics which is why they turn to IPS cells. In any research project, researchers often choose to projects that are ethical in order to avoid these debates. But this may hinder us from creating new and effective medications for certain diseases.
